Why does the Herald's Food section suck so bad?

We live in one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world. We have a restaurant sector that's booming and more and more new places are opening than any time since I've lived here. And what does the Herald decide to spotlight on the front page of its Food section? Casseroles! Not only that, the picture on the front page is a casserole with tater tots! Where are we, Des Moines? Can you imagine the NY Times front paging a tater tot casserole? Miami is about 5 years behind the rest of the country when it comes to educated dining (local sourcing, sustainable farming, etc.) but this paper, and especially this food section, is about 50 years behind the times. There's even a section for "Quick Suppers". Who the heck uses the word "supper" anymore?! Food Editor Kathy Martin has to go and the Herald needs to find someone about 80 years younger to refresh this section and bring it at least up to the 1980's.

Did you catch the byline on the casserole article? McClatchy News Service, and the photo is credited to The Kansas City Star. So it's not Des Moines...but it's close. Probably a result of all of those cost-cutting measures. But yeah, selecting a casserole story from the wires to lead the food section for the Miami Herald is not a good idea.

A lot of their food section stories and recipes come from wire services. A few weeks ago they had a story on CSA. Excited, I clicked on it and it was a person talking about her CSA experience except it came from the news service. It wasn't local. There are many interesting things going on in food to focus on casseroles, I agree! You'll get Mr. Daily Cocaine going with this post... remember, he calls them "The Four Lindas."

Here, here. You are so right. It's sad but true.

YUCK! I agree with you that Miami isn't really Tater-tot Casserole Friendly!

The thought of Tuna Noodle Casserole makes my stomach clench. I suffered at least once a month as a child when my step-mom would torture us with that... Darn her mid-west hide!

Yeah, I definitely think a lot of newspapers are cutting costs and resorting to generic articles like this. This inspires me to open up my vintage Betty Crocker cookbook. Some beef bouillon or clam juice to quench your thirst anyone?
